Joanna Brown is a Brighton-based installation artist, interested in those aspects of life that tweak at the edges of consciousness: a brief encounter with the eyes of another, a feeling of déjà vu, an unexpected glimpse of the invisible. She creates objects, spaces and events to bring these intangible aspects of life into focus, inviting the viewer to enter a place beyond language and explore the threshold between sensation and what lies beyond. Her current work proposes the concept of sonic-memory, the imagined sounds we carry within us, whispering and calling to us, interrupting our lives with memories of other places and times. Here she considers how these idealised soundscapes inform our sense of place, space and personal identity.
